All my life I have lived near the water and I can never get enough of its beauty. Whether the sun is shining brightly off of it like little sparkly diamonds or the rain is pounding down so hard it jumps back up off the surface, there's just that special something that only water brings into our lives.  I have noticed over the years that when I visit someplace that is not close to a large body of water I feel off balance.  It's as if deep down I need to know that the ocean, a big lake or a river is somewhere nearby and that I can get there in a flash if I need a fix.

Living on the island of Manhattan I am literally surrounded by water every day.  And with that water comes the bridges and tunnels that connect us to the rest of the world.  Whenever possible, I try to find the time to linger on or around the bridges, or at least be close enough to catch a glimpse through the viewfinder of my camera.

Bridges can have history and strength....

I love spending lazy summer afternoons picnicking beneath the George Washington Bridge, mere steps from our apartment in Washington Heights...

I will cherish the memories of a freezing cold day last winter on the Brooklyn Bridge.  After our very small City Hall wedding in lower Manhattan, the only place I could think to take our wedding photographs was on the Brooklyn Bridge. Despite the wind, unbearably cold December temperatures and slippery ice from a snow storm a few days prior, our small group of family and friends came along for the journey...

And of course, when I really need to recharge, there is always a day like today, when the driving rain keeps everyone away and I get to enjoy it all for myself...

Did you know that there are 2,027 bridges in New York City?  I actually didn't know that until I researched it for this post.  I hope you learned a little something about my city today.
